Now that the last week of Advent just started, we recommend something light before Christmas starts. This is an expectation anyway in traditional Christian culture as fasting is a way to prepare the body and mind for the celebration.
Advent in a nutshell
In Christian culture the four Sundays before Christmas is called Advent. The Latin word advent means coming or arrival. This means the arrival of the newborn Jesus Christ. The purpose of Advent is to get ready for His arrival. This is well-symbolized by how we light one more candle each week on the Advent wreath. While the days are getting shorter, the candles increase the amount of light until the day the Savior, the Light of the world, is born.
Fasting before the Christmas period makes people move away from material pleasures and focus on spirituality. Fasting before the feast enhances the experience of material pleasures in the feast. It makes the Christmas table richer and more abundant.
A recipe for fasting before Christmas: Spicy bulgur salad
We praised hot paprika several times for its positive properties. This time paprika comes with ingredients like bulgur, mushrooms and garlic. They’re all healthy ingredients and together they form a truly harmonious Advent dish. You may also use quinoa instead of bulgur for this recipe.
Here’s the Spicy bulgur salad recipe: after the bulgur base is cooked, add crispy vegetables like carrots, green beans, broccoli and mushrooms pre-cooked in olive oil. Salt and garlic give the essential seasoning. Balsamic vinegar, lemongrass, parsley and ginger bring more exotic flavors. And then comes the big paprika moment. The recipe suggests a teaspoon of hot paprika, but I recommend for recipes like this don’t use powder. Instead, use spicy paprika flakes, like our szegedi hot paprika flakes By adding a few flakes to the bulgur salad, you honor an old tradition, help protect your health and get ready for Christmas.
Thanks for the recipe idea
