300 years ago today, on 21 May 1719, Hungarian King Charles III.granted city status to the municipality of Szeged and the crest that symbolizes this status has been used by Szeged municipality to this day. The memory of this formal recognition of Szeged as a royal free city has grown to be the most important celebration for Szeged: the Day of Szeged on 21 May has become almost two weeks’ of festivities in mid-May including the Szeged Wine Festival and my personal favorite, the Szeged Bridge Fair.
This year on 25 and 26 of May the “pontevecchio” or Old Bridge is closed down for two days to give space to a wide-range of crafted goods, street artists, pageants and good food. The downtown is swarming with people and there’s hardly a time in the year when Szeged is more colorful and fun than at this time.
